The ground carries handwritten Japanese account entries, several dated 明治四十一年, the forty-first year of Meiji (1908). They remain legible through the work. Over them Rodin sets a lidded cup, bowls and a carved armchair in ink and gouache, with brushed characters running the full width of the sheet.
