The Work

I InteriorsChairs, jars, bowls and paper lanterns, printed and painted onto antique Japanese documents: handwritten letters, account books, sheets stamped edge to edge with a period chop. The furnishings of a cultivated room sit on top of the paperwork of other lives, and the two begin to speak to each other. View the series II LedgersPainted directly onto washi paper from Meiji-era Japanese loan ledgers. The printed columns still carry their original entries: 信用, credit; 拾圓, ten yen; the due date, the interest. Across them move courtesans, scholars, fans and chrysanthemums, an inventory of beauty laid over an inventory of debt. Related works carry the same idea onto eighteenth-century American newspapers. View the series III MonoprintsSingle impressions pulled from an inked plate and finished by hand. No two are alike, and each exists only once. View the series IV PrayersInk gestures laid down in rows on rice paper, then washed over with gouache and watercolor. Repeated marks, each one slightly different, made for concentration and meant to be returned to: a prayer to observe again and again, finding something new each time. View the series V StudiesBotanicals, porcelain, portraits and the city of Boston. Works drawn from close observation in ink, watercolor and gouache, with a quick, assured line and direct, unmixed color. View the series
